Growing Herbs Indoors: The Fastest Ways

Growing green onions requires patience, various containers with soil or water, regular watering, humidifying the air, and more. Of course, this causes inconvenience. However, there are also simple ways which make growing herbs indoors easier. This will take only 15 days.

Just prepare the essentials first and plant according to our instructions. If you plant onions in November or early December, there will be fresh herbs for your holiday meals by Christmas!

Growing Herbs Indoors: The Fastest Ways

The First Method

Take a plastic Coca-Cola bottle and cut off the top of the neck, then cut the bottle in half in the middle.

Fill the bottom of the bottle with sawdust, toilet paper, cloth, or any other material that can keep moisture for a long time.

Choose small onions (about the size of an egg) so you can put from 5 to 7 in each bottle. Cut off the tops of each onion so that the insides show. This helps oxygen to reach the leaf buds better.

Plant the bulbs with their roots down. Water with about ⅓ cup (80 ml) of water, put on the second part of the bottle, and place on the windowsill.

After 15–25 days, the green parts of the onions will reach 12 inches (30 cm). Water them not too often, depending on how moist the sawdust is. Don’t worry if not all the bulbs sprout fast — this is common during the fall. Over time, they will catch up with the rest.

The Second Method

If you don’t want to cut a bottle, there’s a quick method of growing green onions in a plastic bag. It is quite similar to the one described above. If you are worried about the bag breaking and leaking, place it in a plastic or ceramic container.

To speed up the sprouting, soak the onions in warm water for 2 days, change the water in the morning and evening. This trick will help your herbs sprout 10 days earlier. After soaking, dry the husks of the onions with a napkin, put them close to each other in a plastic bag with a layer of wet filler at least ¾ inch (2 cm) thick.

After planting the bulbs fill the bag with air and tie it, without letting out the air. Place it in a dark, cool place in your apartment for 3 days to speed up the process. 3 days later, place your mini greenhouse on a windowsill that has a lot of light. There is no need to water and fertilize the herbs while they are growing.

Do not untie the bag until the green parts of the onions reach the top of the bag. From the moment you open the bag, make sure that the filler does not dry out. Do not cut off the first leaves, but let new bunches grow. Cut off the leaves along the edges, moving towards the center as they grow.

With this method, you save the bulb, which can be also eaten. You can grow green garlic, shallots, chives, and leeks in the same way.

These simple methods will allow you to get a lot of fresh herbs during not only winter but the whole year. As you can see, there is nothing difficult in growing herbs indoors. Choose the method you like, and by Christmas, you’ll have homegrown green onions!

Like many people nowadays, I love to explore new places. My favorite type is slow travelling, when you can really blend in with locals and learn about new cultures and languages. But I think there are also perfect times for enjoying freshly baked pastry, a cup of fragrant coffee, and a good movie in the comfort of your own home. I guess I'm kind of a cultural omnivore, and I watch different types of movies, but the ones about art and food inspire me the most!
