How to Grow Turmeric at Home

When you stop thinking of turmeric as a spice and start considering it as a plant that also has healing properties, the question of how to grow turmeric does not take long. Experts say that turmeric has over 175 positive physiological properties and about 600 therapeutic and preventative goals.

Growing it indoors is not difficult. Buy a rootstock and approach the task with utmost seriousness. In general, growing takes up to 10 months. Harvest is necessary when the flowers turn yellow and begin to dry out. So, where to grow turmeric and what to start with?

Turmeric: Growing and Tending

Soil

Is it possible to grow turmeric at home if there is no fertile soil at hand? Yes! You can mix the optimal soil yourself by combining peat, grain soil, humus and river sand in equal proportions.

Many people also add a drainage layer, placing it on the bottom of the planter. For this, crushed red brick, keramzit or pebbles are used. Decorate the top layer with moss, it will also absorb excess liquid.

Planter

The best option is ceramics. Why? The thing has the so-called “breathing” structure, which is absolutely harmless to the rootstock. Another important advantage is that ceramic planters suit almost any interior.

Do not be afraid to take a deep planter (up to 12 inches (30 cm)). Take a closer look at the neck: it is good if wide. The presence of drainage holes is required. The better the microclimate in the planter, the higher the number of buds and color saturation, and the healthier is the rootstock.

Lighting

When growing turmeric, protect the plant from direct sunlight. It does not mean that the planter needs to be hidden in the pantry. The ideal solution is diffused light and backlighting with ultraviolet lamps.

If the plant doesn’t have enough light, it grows strongly elongated stems and very pale flowers.

Watering

Soil moisture should be at least 60%. How to achieve that? To grow turmeric at home, water the plant with half a cup of water every two to three days. Leaves need to be sprayed with a spray bottle. Once a week, pour the plant with warm water, but don’t pour the petals and inflorescences.

More active watering is needed between the end of April and the end of September. In winter and spring, the amount watering is reduced. When turmeric drops leaves, stop watering completely, because the rootstock should overwinter in dry soil.

Rest Period

Without a doubt, it is important where and how to grow turmeric at home, but there is a period of so-called rest, when the plant needs to be left alone. When? As soon as blooming stops, cut off the stems (about 3 ½ inches (7–10 cm) from the ground).

Remove the planter from the window and place under the kitchen sink. Ideally, the rootstock should be completely extracted from the planter and transferred to a box of sand. In the first days of March, replant it in the usual place and place back near the window.

By the way, you can breed the plant by dividing the rootstock into parts. This is done during a spring replanting. Using a sharp knife, cut the rootstock into several parts so that each part has a root and buds. Just plant and tend as described above.
