There is no such thing as too much chocolate. With this in mind, our recipe for black cocoa cake incorporates loads of the exquisite, indulgence-worthy flavor. Somewhat bitter, rich, and intense, this dessert is every chocolate enthusiast’s and sweet-tooth’s dream. As if things were’s exciting enough, the recipe for this treat features black cocoa powder — alkali-processed, dutched cocoa.

Not only does the black cocoa powder provide the cake with a strikingly dark, practically charcoal black, color, but also a deep, intensely chocolatey flavor that will satisfy even the biggest chocolate fanatic’s cravings. Besides, it also calls for some freshly-brewed coffee, making this dessert irresistible. The dessert of your dreams awaits. Let’s start!

Steps

1
Done

Prepare the Frosting

Place chocolate chips in the bowl of a stand mixer. Set aside.

2
Done

Combine heavy cream, black cocoa powder, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt in a saucepan and place it over medium heat. Heat, continuously whisking, until the black cocoa powder is fully dissolved and the mixture begins to simmer.

3
Done

Pour the hot cream mixture over the chocolate chips and stir until uniform.

4
Done

Pop in the fridge for 2 hours. Meanwhile, make the cake.

5
Done

Prepare the Cake

Preheat the oven to 350 °F.

6
Done

Liberally grease a 9x13-inch metal baking dish with butter, then line it with parchment paper.

7
Done

Combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl and whisk to mix.

8
Done

In a separate bowl, whisk together heavy cream, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.

9
Done

Add the cream mixture to flour mixture and stir until homogenous. Finally, add hot brewed coffee and stir until smooth.

10
Done

Evenly distribute the batter in the prepared baking dish and bake for 25 to 30 minutes.

11
Done

Once finished baking, transfer the pan to a wire rack and let cool for an hour.

12
Done

Assemble the Cake

Remove the cake from the pan and discard the parchment paper. Trim the top, so it's flat. Flip the cake over and carefully transfer it back into the pan.

13
Done

Beat the chilled frosting on high speed until light and fluffy (approximately 2 minutes). Frost the cake and decorate with sprinkles.

Here's the chocolate dessert you've been waiting for! Indulge in this delicious chocolate and coffee cake, and be sure to share your feedback with us — we'd love to know if you're as obsessed with this treat as we are. Enjoy!

I am an English major with a love of languages and fiction, and with an incurable travel bug. In my free time, I read fantasy, drink copious amounts of coffee, and like to go see movies. Culinary art means everything to me. My main hypostasis is the taster, though. The music school has taught me to appreciate the symphony of airy meringues, to create harmonious overtures of light snacks, hard rock of meat, fish, and vegetables on the grill. Choir classes have accustomed me to hear and feel the people nearby and create perfect harmonies of sounds.
